Religion and the Politics of Development
This book originated in a conference on ?Religion and the Politics of Development? hosted by the Asia Research Institute (ARI), National University of Singapore in August 2013. We are very grateful for generous support from ARI and The Henry R. Luce Initiative on Religion and International Affairs. Staff from ARI were outstanding in their organisation of the event, especially Jonathan Lee, Valerie Yeo, Sharon Ong, and Henry Kwan. We are also grateful to all the presenters and panel chairs for their involvement. While not all the presentations made at that conference are included in this volume, the conversations that were had at that time have helped shape some of the arguments that have been subsequently developed in the chapters presented here. Among the scholars, development practitioners, and policymakers who were involved, we would like to thank Itty Abraham, Michel Anglade, Masooda Bano, Julius Bautista, Malini Bhattacharjee, Caroline Brassard, Martin van Bruinessen, Jeremy England, Scott Guggenheim, Sandra Hamid, Jeffrey Haynes, Alexander Horstmann,
Charlotte Keenan, Hilman Latief, Francis Lim, Adeel Malik, Katherine Marshall, Patti O?Neill, Christine Schenk, James Putzel, Carole Rakodi, Trihadi Saptohadi, Ronojoy Sen, Kalinga Tudor Silva, and Dicky Sofyan. In preparing this volume for publication it has been a pleasure to work with Timothy Shaw, the series editor of the International Political Economy series, and with Christina Brian from Palgrave Macmillan. The
manuscript also bene?ted greatly from careful copyediting by Wajihah Hamid.
